A Year Later: Kakamega Township Primary School

A year ago, generous donors helped build a rainwater catchment system, latrines, and hand washing stations for Kakamega Township Primary School in Kenya. Because of these gifts and our monthly donors, partners are able to visit project sites throughout the year, strengthening relationships with communities and evaluating the actual water project. Because of these consistent visits, we learn vital lessons and we hear amazing stories - we're excited to share this one with you.

“From my own observation, the level of cleanliness in the school is very high,” says field officer Betty Muhongo Majani. “The feeding program is made easy since they have water within the school compound and pupils were not seen carrying water containers to school as in the past due to enough supply of water within the school.”

Betty had a chance to speak with Head Teacher Robert Opwora as well. “Since the project was completed, the cost of paying water bills has gone down and the money can be used to do other development activities in the school. There is a great improvement in terms of performance as pupils now have time to concentrate on their school work. There are no longer cases of water borne diseases amongst the pupils,” he shared.

Lucy Wanakuta, a 13-year-old student at Kakamega Township Primary School said, “Since the project was completed, classrooms are now clean because we can wash them daily. We also use the water for drinking while at school and we are now healthy.”
